The gas engine won't be just any four-pot, however. According to Autocar, the engine will be the crazy 2.0-liter hot hatch engine Mercedes has deployed with more than 400 horsepower in AMG 45 models. For the AMG C63, the engine will be tuned to 470 horsepower. Adding a 201-hp electric motor on the rear axle will bump total output to around 670 hp with 553 lb-ft of torque.

The Mercedes-AMG C63 will be based on the W206 C-Class. The engine in question could well be the M139 turbocharged four-cylinder used in the current Mercedes-AMG A45 S. In this setup, the engine makes 310kW/500Nm, however AMG claims that the unit used in the new C63 could make around 500kW of power with 150kW coming from the electric motor.

The AMG C63 based on the next-gen C-Class unveiled last week will be shifting from a V8 engine to a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder power unit. That’s the same four-pot banger from the new Mercedes-AMG A45, but with a twist. According to Car Magazine, the engine is partnered with an integrated starter-generator (ISG) and rear-mounted motor.
